SLS Professional Learning Programme 2023-24

SLS is the key provider of professional learning for school leaders across Scotland. Our professional learning programme has been accredited by the General Teaching Council for Scotland.

The provision for the coming session will reflect the needs of all members with regards to current educational issues.  As in previous years, the professional learning offer will draw on the skills and experiences of current school leaders, as well as having input from our partners in the Scottish educational landscape. The programme will be published on our website and members will receive emails about upcoming events.

A hybrid approach will be taken to the delivery of professional learning events; both virtual and in-person events will be on offer throughout the session.  Both members and non-members will be welcome to attend our events.

The professional learning programme will be expanded to include other forms of professional learning as the session progresses.  Further information to follow.

Our programme is co-ordinated by Allyson Dobson, Professional Learning Co-ordinator.

The uncommon sense of MESSY leadership and why striving to be the ‘perfect school leader’ may not be helping you.

School leadership is changing. Head teachers are leading in increasingly complex and uncertain environments and needing to draw on adaptive leadership expertise and collaborative approaches.

Global educational leadership experts, BTS Spark, conducted research during the pandemic to identify the characteristics of school leaders who were thriving despite huge uncertainties. The results described a radically different type of school leadership, ‘MESSY leadership’.

In this webinar, Denise Barrows, Head of BTS Spark, UK and Jean Crawford, BTS Spark Coach and Facilitator, will share key insights including the top nine challenges that education leaders are grappling with and seeking coaching support on. They will reveal the ‘uncommon sense of MESSY leadership’ – turning on its head old doctrine on what ‘effective school leadership’ entails. And they will offer some practical strategies for school leaders to trial as they free themselves up to embrace the wonderful ‘messiness’ of school leadership. Further information attached.

This event is open to both members and non-members.
