Benefits

SLS (formerly known as the Headteachers’ Association of Scotland) has been rebranded to reflect a continually growing association representing the interests of Senior Managers in Scottish secondary schools. Our membership includes at least 75% of secondary headteachers and representation in over 85% of schools. For both existing and newly appointed senior management staff, SLS provides advice, support and information – a vital service to the entire leadership team.

The positive role of SLS

SLS develops policies, position statements and parliamentary bulletins and press comment on important educational issues as they affect Scottish secondary schools. SLS represents and promotes the interests of secondary senior management team members. The association puts forward the views of those who manage Scottish secondary schools and so influences decision making at local and national level. SLS membership includes experts in various fields and is represented on major local and national educational Bodies such as the General Teaching Council for Scotland, Learning and Teaching Scotland and the Scottish Qualifications Authority.

  • SLS exerts a major influence upon the Scottish educational scene.
Its voice is both heard and respected.
  • Our influence is widely recognised at home and abroad and we command
    respect at all levels.

What Kind of Support is Available?

Professional support to members

In this most important area, the support of the professional staff of the
association is readily available. Increasingly, senior management team members are placed in situations where appropriate professional advice from the association is needed and valued, sometimes at short notice.

SLS also provides high quality training opportunities to assist senior staff to handle day-to-day issues and situations. We are recognised as a major provider of quality CPD for senior staff and others.

You will have immediate and individual help from your General Secretary and Field Officer.

  • averting crises before they ‘break’
  • providing an independent ear
  • giving advice based on wide knowledge and experience of secondary senior management roles
  • access to first class legal advice where this is needed
  • a quick response from our Admin and Finance Manager, who may be the first point of contact and is well briefed to handle the enquiries of members
